EPA: 2.04 billion RINs generated in August

The U.S. EPA on Aug. 21 released data indicating nearly 2.04 billion renewable identification numbers (RINs) were generated under the Renewable Fuel Standard in August, up from 1.84 billion generated during the same month of last year. Total RIN generation for the first eight months of the year reached nearly 15.45 billion, up from 13.9 billion generated during the same period of 2022.

Nearly 60.2 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in August, including 52.15 million generated for compressed renewable natural gas (RNG) by domestic producers, 4.26 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 3.26 million generated for liquefied RNG by importers, 384,983 generated for compressed RNG by importers, and 139,648 generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers.

Total D3 RIN generation for the first eight months of 2023 reached 439.34 million. That volume includes 383 million generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers, 30.95 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 20.64 million generated for liquefied RNG by importers, 3.95 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, and 800,705 generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers.

More than 701.32 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in August, including 382.88 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 226.56 million generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 66.36 million generated for biodiesel by importers, 19.96 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 3.26 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers, and 2.3 million generated for renewable jet fuel by foreign entities.

Total D4 RIN generation for the first eight months of this year reached 5.03 billion. That volume includes 2.43 billion generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 1.66 billion generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 459.92 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 445.35 million generated for biodiesel by importers, 14.79 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers, 11.27 million generated for renewable jet fuel by foreign entities, and 336,877 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers.

Nearly 16.58 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in August, including 8.62 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 4.96 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 2.35 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 370,703 generated for LPG by domestic producers, 142,970 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, and 137,708 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.

Total D5 RIN generation for the first eight months of 2023 reached 156.33 million. That volume includes 79.62 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 50.04 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 19.6 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 3.02 million generated for LGP by domestic producers, 2.85 million generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, and 1.2 million generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.

More than 1.26 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in August, nearly all 1.26 billion were generated for ethanol by domestic producers, with 1.48 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers, 1.45 million generated for ethanol by importers, 327,746 generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 81,304 generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, and 47,892 generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities.

Total D6 RIN generation for the first eight months of the year reached 9.83 billion. That volume includes 9.72 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 100.44 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 7.55 million generated for ethanol by importers, 1.48 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers, 327,746 generated nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, and 81,304 generated for biodiesel by domestic producers.

According to EPA, 28,704 D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated in August, all for cellulosic heating oil by importers. Total D7 RIN generation for the first eight months of 2023 reached 166,084, all of which were generated for cellulosic heating oil by importers.
