EPA: 1.84 billion RINs generated in May

The U.S. EPA has released data showing that nearly 1.84 billion renewable identification numbers (RINs) were generated under the Renewable Fuel Standard in May, up from 1.72 billion generated during the same month of last year.

More than 56.59 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in May, including 45.62 million generated for compressed renewable natural gas (RNG) by domestic producers, 7.71 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 2.85 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, 258,819 generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers, and 161,649 generated for liquefied RNG by importers.

Total D3 RIN generation for the first five months of 2022 reached 201.05 million. That volume includes 160.57 million generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers, 28.47 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 10.94 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, 637,448 generated for liquefied RNG by importers, and 433,126 generated for ethanol by domestic producers.

Nearly 513.38 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in May, including 216.57 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 209.73 million generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 69.3 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 17.46 million generated for biodiesel by importers, and 324,530 generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers.

Total D4 RIN generation for the first five months of the year reached 2.25 billion. That volume includes 931.67 million generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 872.94 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 312.58 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 125.46 generated for biodiesel by importers, 5.29 million generated for renewable jet fuel by foreign entities, 5.04 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers, and 37,939 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers.

More than 34.07 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in May, including 14.76 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 10.69 million generated for ethanol by importers, 5.4 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 2.79 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 293,324 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, 73,892 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers, and 71,055 generated for LPG by domestic producers.

Total D5 RIN generation for the first five months of 2022 reached 115.54 million. That volume includes 46.73 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 31.49 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 21.38 million generated for ethanol by importers, 12.34 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 1.62 million generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, 1.45 million generated for LPG by domestic producers, and 530,947 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.

More than 1.23 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in May, including 1.22 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 10.72 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 1.21 million generated for ethanol by importers.

Total D6 RIN generation for the first five months of the year reached 5.92 billion. That volume includes 5.87 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 41.65 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 5.4 million generated for ethanol by importers.

No D7 cellulosic RINs were generated in May. A total of 58,930 D7 RINs were generated during the first five months of 2022, all for cellulosic heating oil by importers in February.

According to the EPA, more than 8.49 billion RINs were generated under the RFS during the first five months of 2022, up from 7.6 billion generated during the same period of last year.
