Nordex secures large Texas onshore wind turbine deal in bumper month for US order book

Nordex has won an order from Swift Current Energy to supply 41 of its N149/4.X wind turbines operating at up to 4.8MW to the 196MW Castle Gap Castle Gap (196MW) OnshoreMills and Lampasas Counties, Texas, USA, North America Click to see full details project in Central Texas. The deal includes a service contract covering five years of operations and maintenance.

The manufacturer will supply the turbines on tubular steel towers with a hub height of 108 metres. Delivery and installation of the turbines is scheduled for summer 2022 with commissioning planned for the end of the same year.

It is the second large Texan order for Nordex this month, following an agreement with Jera Americas to supply 67 of its N155/4.X turbines, operating at up to 4.5MW, for the 300MW El Sauz El Sauz (300MW) OnshoreWillacy County, Texas, USA, North America Click to see full details project in Willacy County.

The Castle Gap wind farm is Swift Current’s second large-scale wind project in Texas, following completion of the 450MW High Lonesome High Lonesome (450MW) OnshoreUpton and Crockett Counties, Texas, USA, North America Click to see full details project in Crockett and Upton Counties in 2019. 

“Texas is the number one renewable energy generator in the US, producing a quarter of the national total and over 21% of all in-state electricity generation,” said Eric Lammers, chief executive of Swift Current. 

Swift Current has completed 1.1GW of renewable energy projects across North America and claims to have a pipeline of more than 6GW.

Nordex has supplied 2.9GW of turbines to operating wind farms in Texas, according to Windpower Intelligence, the research and data division of Windpower Monthly. It is due to supply a further 1GW for wind farms due online by the end of next year.
