Japan’s largest offshore wind farm inaugurated in Hokkaido

The 112MW Ishikari Bay New Port offshore wind farm first came online earlier this year, and is located in Ishikari Bay in the Sea of Japan.
The project is supplied by 14 Siemens Gamesa SG 8MW-167 DD turbines and is co-owned by Japanese power firm Jera and its subsidiary Green Power Investment.
Japan relies heavily on fossil fuel imports in its energy mix but has set far-reaching renewable energy targets in line with its decarbonisation goals.
The country aims to have 10GW of capacity by 2030 and up to 45GW by 2040. It currently has around 425MW of installed offshore wind capacity, according to Windpower Intelligence, the research and data division of Windpower Monthly.
Japan currently has around 5.7GW of installed wind power capacity overall at present, most of which is onshore.
