On 4 July 2023, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM (New Zealand time),  the Asia-Western Pacific Regional Branch of the International Geothermal Association (IGA-AWPRB) will be hosting a webinar on How Geothermal Energy Became a Key Player in the Taiwan 2050 Net-Zero Policy.

Registration for the webinar is currently available via this link.

The speaker for the webinar will be Dr. Wang, Shou-Cheng (Basalt), from the Geothermal Team of the National Taiwan Ocean University, and member of the Taiwan Geothermal Association and Taiwan Ecological Stewardship Association.

Geothermal energy is a key focus for net-zero emissions by 2050 and strategy for the island of Taiwan. The initial goal is not only to reach 20MW by 2025, but at least 1000MW by 2030. There have been many technological breakthroughs in geothermal drilling, exploration and power generation systems in recent years.

Introducing the international industry chain is another key to reducing domestic costs and risks. The domestic regulations and exploration information disclosure have significantly progressed, stimulating more than 20 new project sites. It is expected that there will be five geothermal power plants operating in Taiwan by the end of this year, three of which are located in Yilan County. Expanding the scale of geothermal power generation will benefit from an on-going focus on a new geothermal legal framework.

The IGA-AWPRB has hosted a series of webinars since 2021 featuring speakers from New Zealand, China, Philippines, Indonesia, India, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and Japan. The recordings of the previous webinars can be accessed at the IGA-AWPRB website.
