Registration is currently open for a webinar taking place on 9 May 2023, hosted by the IGA-AWPRB on the Geothermal Policy Framework of New Zealand.

On 9 May 2023, 3:30 to 4:30 PM (New Zealand time),  the Asia-Western Pacific Regional Branch of the International Geothermal Association (IGA-AWPRB) will be hosting a webinar on an Introduction to the Geothermal Policy Framework of New Zealand.

Registration for the webinar is currently available via this link.

The webinar will have two speakers tackling different aspects of New Zealand’s geothermal policy framework:

  • Katherine Luketina from the Waikato Regional Council will give a talk on the “Development of New Zealand’s geothermal policy framework.”
  • Penny Doorman from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council will present on “Finding a balance: Managing the Rotorua Geothermal System.”

As one of the world’s major geothermal nations, New Zealand is a leader in geothermal resource management through the framework of the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and the Central Government’s devolution of geothermal resource management to Regional Councils.

In the 30 years since the RMA was enacted, the geothermal policy developed by the Bay of Plenty and Waikato Regional Councils has managed the competing interests of large-scale energy development and the protection of rare and vulnerable geothermal features and landscapes for 90% of the national geothermal resource.

The IGA-AWPRB has hosted a series of webinars since 2021 featuring speakers from New Zealand, China, Philippines, Indonesia, India, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and Japan. The recordings of the previous webinars can be accessed at the IGA-AWPRB website.
