EPA: 1.72 billion RINs generated in September

The U.S. EPA has released data showing that 1.72 billion renewable identification numbers (RINs) were generated under the Renewable Fuel Standard in September, up from 1.62 billion generated during the same month of last year. Total RIN generation for the first nine months of the year reached 14.59 billion, up from 14.43 billion generated during the same period of 2021.
More than 57.7 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in September, including 47.27 million generated for compressed renewable natural gas (RNG) by domestic producers, 7.1 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 2 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, 1.2 million generated for liquefied RNG by importers, and 143,328 generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers.
Total D3 RIN generation for the first nine months of 2022 reached 430.31 million. That volume includes 348.35 million generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers, 56.88 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 20.84 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, 3.16 million generated for liquefied RNG by importers, and 1.09 million generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers.
More than 501.4 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in September, including 211.88 million generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 201.82 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 58.43 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 28.64 million generated for biodiesel by importers, and 629,714 generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers.
Total D4 RIN generation for the first three quarters of this year reached 4.12 billion. That volume includes 1.79 billion generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 1.62 billion generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 473.72 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 219.25 million generated for biodiesel by importers, 10.37 million generated for renewable jet fuel by foreign entities, 9.4 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers, and 37,939 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers.
Nearly 35.08 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in September, including 14.99 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 9.13 million generated for ethanol by importers, 7.67 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 2.33 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 708,518 generated for LPG by domestic producers, 172,969 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, and 71,465 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.
Total D5 RIN generation for the first nine months of the year reached 220.82 million. That volume includes 89.16 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 61.9 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 41.26 million generated for ethanol by importers, 22.03 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 3.42 million generated for LPG by domestic producers, 2.27 million generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, and 787,454 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.
Nearly 1.13 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in September, including 1.11 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 13.14 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 1.19 million generated for ethanol by importers.
Total D6 RIN generation for the first three quarters of 2022 reached 10.82 billion. That volume includes 10.74 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 69.83 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 10.4 million generated for ethanol by importers.
According to the EPA, 11,086 D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated in September, all for cellulosic heating oil by importers. Total D7 RIN generation for the first nine months of 2022 reached 202,455, all of which were generated for cellulosic heating oil by importers.
