The U.S. EPA has released updated renewable identification number (RIN) data, reporting that nearly 1.7 billion RINs were generated under the Renewable Fuel Standard in October, up from 1.56 billion generated during the same month of last year.

Nearly 48.7 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in October, including 38.77 million generated for compressed renewable natural gas (RNG) by domestic producers, 6.94 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 2.63 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, and 349,262 generated for liquefied RNG by importers.

Total D3 RIN generation for the first 10 months of 2021 was at 413.5 million. That volume includes 326.26 million generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers, 59.87 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 25.83 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, 1.29 million generated for liquefied RNG by importers, and 244,278 generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers.

More than 420.25 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in October, including 209.03 million generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 112.32 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 71.37 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 26.83 million generated for biodiesel by importers, and 700,386 generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers.

Total D4 RIN generation for the first 10 months of this year reached 3.81 billion. That volume includes 2.1 billion generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 966.3 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 534.5 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 203.56 million generated for biodiesel by importers, 6.89 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers, and 4.86 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by importers.

Nearly 23.78 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in October, including 10.74 million generated for ethanol by importers, 7 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 3.38 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 1.94 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 303,658 generated for LPG by domestic producers, 234,290 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, and 173,281 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.

Total D5 RIN generation for the first 10 months of 2021 was at 192.07 million. That volume includes 84.21 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 59.51 million generated for ethanol by importers, 21.24 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 20.71 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 3.57 million generated for LGP by domestic producers, 1.67 million generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, and 1.16 million generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.

More than 1.2 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in October, including 1.18 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 18.2 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 1.23 million generated for ethanol by importers.

Total D6 RIN generation for the first 10 months of this year reached 11.68 billion. That volume includes 11.56 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 110.77 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 10.04 million generated for ethanol by importers.

The EPA also reported that 60,338 D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated in October for cellulosic heating oil by importers, marking the first time in 2021 that D7 RINs have been generated under the RFS.

In total, nearly 16.1 billion RINs were generated under the RFS during the first 10 months of 2021, up from 14.96 billion generated during the same period of last year.
