Goldwind announces 7.2MW onshore wind turbine

Energy Disrupter

Goldwind has unveiled 15 new turbine models, including 7.2MW onshore and 12MW offshore models.

The Chinese manufacturer has announced a new GW 171 onshore platform, with a 171-metre rotor and eight power ratings, ranging from 3.85MW to 6.25MW.

It has also unveiled a new GW 191 onshore platform, with a 191-metre rotor and six power ratings, ranging from 4MW to 7.2MW.

In addition, it also has a new GW 242-12MW offshore model, with a 242-metre rotor diameter matching that of compatriot MingYang Smart Energy’s largest turbine.

Some of the onshore models are already available to the Chinese market, and Goldwind has signed contracts for some models, a spokeswoman told Windpower Monthly.

It still needs to obtain international certification and carry out further technical due diligence before making the turbines available internationally, she added.

The turbine manufacturer has not confirmed when prototypes will be installed or when the turbines will be commercially available.

Several other wind turbine manufacturers – including Vestas, MingYang Smart Energy, GE Renewable Energy, Nordex, and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy – now offer onshore models with power ratings of at least 6MW, but no 7MW-plus models.

Meanwhile, several manufacturers offer more powerful offshore wind turbines, including MingYang Smart Energy, Vestas, GE Renewable Energy and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy. Only MingYang’s MySE 16.0-242 turbine has a rotor as large as Goldwind’s new GW 242-12MW model.
