Nordex has received an order for 17 of its N163/5.X turbines with anti-icing systems to be installed at the 96.9MW Nuolivaara Nuolivaara (96.9MW) OnshoreKemijärvi, Finland, Europe Click to see full details wind farm being developed by Wpd inside the Arctic Circle, in northern Finland.

Cold-climate versions of the turbines, which can operate at temperatures as low as -30°C, will be deployed some 25 kilometres to the north-east of Kemijärvi.

The blades are equipped with Nordex’s advanced anti-icing system, which prevents ice buildup and allows the turbines to be operated continuously even in harsh Nordic conditions.

Nordex will supply the turbines in 5.7MW operating mode on tubular steel towers with hub heights of 159 metres. This tower variant is also being used in the first Wpd Finnish wind farm to order Nordex N163/5.X turbines late last year, the 188MW Karhunnevankangas Karhunnevankangas (188MW) OnshoreFinland, Europe Click to see full details project.

“We are pleased to once again be able to support Wpd’s growth plans in northern Europe with the latest order for the N163/5X turbine,” said Nordex’s chief sales officer Patxi Landa. “We are convinced that the highly efficient N163/5.X will also be able to generate constant high yields throughout the year at this demanding northern location.”

Landa added that half of the turbines Nordex sells to projects located in Nordic countries are typically cold-climate versions.

“The Nuolivaara project represents an important further step for Wpd in the growth market of Finland,” said Heikki Peltomaa, managing director of Wpd Finland Oy. The project is due to be completed in 2022.
