The inevitable transition from fossil fuels to green generation

Energy Disrupter

Electricity production from renewable sources in Europe has surpassed fossil fuels for the first time. Thus, at the end of the year, green generation accounted for 38.2% of all electricity generation in the EU against 37% generated by coal and gas plants. Renewable energy sources (RES) are gradually replacing coal and nuclear power plants in European generation.

At the same time, electricity production from coal in Europe has halved since 2015, and in 2020 coal-fired power plants accounted for only 13% of generation (a 20% drop from 2019). Electricity production at gas-fired plants decreased less critically in 2020, by only 4% year-on-year, helped by a sharp drop in gas prices.
