On December 14, India observed the National Energy Conservation day—an annual event that is organised by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power every year, so as to spread awareness among people about the importance of energy and its conservation. The observance aims to make the general public aware of how efficient use of energy today could save it for the future generations tomorrow.

The BEE uses this day to recognise the achievements of industries in energy conservation, felicitating them with the National Energy Conservation Awards.

However, energy conservation is a practice that needs to be followed by everyone, everywhere—even by the general public in their own households. By being vigilant and smart, and by making minor tweaks in their day-to-day activities, we can all successfully save a good amount of energy right in our homes.

Here are some of the everyday activities that we can stick to in order to conserve energy in our houses:

  1. Check for appliances that consume energy even when you are not using them, or even the appliances that consume the maximum energy in your home. Also, when buying electronics, it is advisable to buy devices under India’s ‘Standards and Labelling Program’, under which manufacturers label the energy consumption of particular electrical devices using a star rating. Higher the number of stars (out of five), higher the efficiency.
  2. Switch to solar wherever possible. Solar energy comes as a handy and affordable alternative to conventional energy sources. Moreover, the Sun’s heat and light can be utilised directly for some particular tasks instead of using electronic devices such as lights (during daytime), dryers, heaters, etc.
  3. Update and maintain the appliances that you use frequently and regularly. If the device is too old, it is likely to draw a lot more energy than its better-maintained counterparts. For example, change the AC filter and equip it to its maximum efficiency.
  4. Change your incandescent bulbs to LED. They are known to use as much as 80 per cent less energy compared to normal bulbs and can also last much longer.
  5. Technology has given us many innovative energy-saving devices, like smart sockets that cut power to devices that are on standby, eco chargers that turn off once the device is charged completely, programmable thermostats that help maintain a constant temperature, and more. Such proven electronics, when used smartly, can help your home lead the way in household energy conservation.

By using such smart and simple ways, you can save good amounts of energy within the walls of your home—something that is not just pocket-friendly for you, but also friendly for the environment in the long run. This National Energy Conservation day, make it your priority to use energy efficiently on a daily basis.
