MingYang unveils new 6.25MW onshore turbine

Chinese manufacturer MingYang Smart Energy has launched a new 6.25MW onshore wind turbine at an industry event in Beijing.

Its new MySE6.25-173 has a power rating of 6.25MW and rotor diameter of 173 metres. It will be the manufacturer’s largest, most powerful onshore wind turbine.

The turbine uses MingYang’s hydrive-drive technology, meaning it uses a compact integrated medium-speed drivetrain with a permanent-magnet generator.

It is aimed at sites with high-wind speeds and would be “particularly suited to wind projects under grid parity”, the developer claimed at the China Wind Power 2020 conference.

The manufacturer has not confirmed a schedule for prototype installation or serial production for the turbine.

MingYang’s previous largest onshore wind turbine was a 5.2MW model, for which it installed a prototype earlier this year.

The MySE6.25-173′s 23,506m2 swept area means at a maximum 6.25MW output, the turbine has a specific power rating of 265W/m² – lower than that of Vestas’ recently announced 6MW EnVentus unit (300W/m²) and Nordex’s newly boosted 5.7MW machine (326W/m²).

However, its specific power rating is higher than that of Siemens Gamesa’s SG 5.8-170 (252W/m²) and Enercon’s 5.5MW E-160 EP5 E2 (242W/m²).

MingYang is also developing an 11MW offshore turbine – due to be the largest offshore unit offered by a Chinese manufacturer – that also uses a hybrid drivetrain.

The Chinese company developed its series of hybrid drivetrain turbines with German engineering firm Aerodyn.
