Adani plans green hydrogen facility and new port terminal in Sri Lanka
The proposal followed a meeting between Adani’s chairman, Gautam Adani, and Sri Lankan president Ranil Wickremesinghe.
In a comment on social media, Adani said the two had discussed “a fascinating set of projects in Sri Lanka including continued development of Colombo Port West Container Terminal, a 500MW wind project and extending our renewable energy expertise to produce green hydrogen”.
Adani Group is a major funder of a $700 million terminal project at Colombo Port West, Sri Lanka’s largest port. Construction of the terminal began in November 2022 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Adani has a 51% stake in the port’s West Container Terminal (WCT), while Sri Lankan firm John Keells Holdings owns 34% and the Sri Lanka Port Authority the remainder.
Adani is an advocate of green hydrogen and has previously described it as “the ultimate source of dense green energy”. He said India’s investment in renewable energy could allow the country to “get a head start” in the hydrogen economy.
The chairman expects his group to be the world’s largest generators of renewable power by 2030, and India to be “one of the largest green hydrogen producers”.
