With geology and geochemistry surface campaigns completed, Ignis Energy has commenced MT surveys at the geothermal exploration sites in Bingöl, Türkiye.

Ignis Energy (Ignis) has reported that the collection and analysis of water samples at the company’s geothermal sites in the Bingöl region in Türkiye. The exploration campaign now progresses to geophysical measurements in areas where surface geology and geochemistry studies have been completed.

This will be the second Magnetotelluric (MT) survey campaign that Ignis will be conducting in the Bingöl region. The survey will be essential in mapping subsurface conductivity, thus identifying potential geothermal reservoirs and deepening the understanding of the region’s geological structure.  The insights gained will play a crucial role in shaping the exploration and development strategies of Ignis, bringing the company one step closer to delivering sustainable, innovative energy solutions.

The MT survey will collect data at 400 points to assess the geothermal reservoir’s structural and hydrogeological characteristics. By analyzing subsurface electrical conductivity, the survey will map the geothermal potential and fault zones. Identifying deep hot water and steam reservoirs will guide future drilling operations, providing a more detailed and reliable assessment of the area’s geothermal potential.

The region where Ignis obtained geothermal exploration licenses is important as it falls within the intersection area of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAF) and the East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAF). The region, where intense tectonism is observed, hosts many natural outflows with temperatures ranging between 30 °C and 68 °C, as well as rich geothermal manifestations indicating the existence of a strong geothermal energy source. Ignis had been awarded the three geothermal resource exploration licenses for this region back in 2023.

Ignis is working FNC Petrol Madencilik Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S., a company specializing in Magnetotelluric surveys.
