EPA: 1.98 billion RINs generated in July

More than 1.98 billion renewable identification numbers (RINs) were generated under the Renewable Fuel Standard in July, up from 1.71 billion generated during the same period of last year, according to data released by the U.S. EPA on Aug. 17. Total RIN generation for the first seven months of 2023 reached 13.4 billion, up from 12.06 billion generated during the same period of 2022.
Nearly 59.97 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in July, including 52.39 million generated for compressed renewable natural gas (RNG) by domestic producers, 4.01 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 2.54 million generated for liquefied RNG by importers, 883,580 generated for liquefied RNG by importers, and 142,475 generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers.
Total D3 RIN generation for the first seven months of 2023 reached 374.84 million. That volume includes 327.24 million generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers, 25.99 million generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers, 17.38 million generated for liquefied RNG by importers, 3.57 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, and 661,057 generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers.
More than 635.4 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in July, including 299.17 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 213.64 million generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 74.49 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 45.27 million generated for biodiesel by importers, and 2.82 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers.
Total D4 RIN generation for the first seven months of this year reached 4.32 billion. That volume includes 2.05 billion generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 1.44 billion generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 439.96 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 378.99 million generated or biodiesel by importers, 11.53 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers, 8.97 million generated for renewable jet fuel by foreign entities, and 336,877 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers.
Nearly 8.35 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in July, including 3.53 million generated or naphtha by domestic producers, 2.08 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 395,406 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, 149,459 were generated for LPG by domestic producers, 118,176 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.
Total D5 RIN generation for the first seven months of 203 reached 134.28 million. That volume includes 65.53 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 45.08 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 17.25 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 2.71 million generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, 2.65 million generated for LPG by domestic producers, and 1.06 million generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.
Nearly 1.28 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in July, including 1.27 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 9.22 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 1.37 million generated for ethanol by importers.
Total D6 RIN generation for the first seven months of the year reached 8.56 billion. That volume includes 8.46 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 100.39 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 6.1 million generated for ethanol by importers.
No D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated in July. Total D7 RIN generation for the first seven months of 2023 reached 137,380, all of which were generated for cellulosic heating oil by importers.
