Geothermal resources confirmed at Ercis district in Van, Türkiye

A geothermal resource at a depth of 750 meters was reached during the drilling works initiated by the Van Metropolitan Municipality to be used in geothermal greenhouse cultivation in the Ercis district in Türkiye. Geothermal water was extracted from the well at a flowrate of 50 liters per second and with a temperature of 65 degrees Celsius.

Exploration and drilling activities for geothermal spring water started in Ercis with the cooperation of Van Governorship, Van Metropolitan Municipality, and Eastern Anatolia Development Agency (DAKA). Under the coordination of Van Governor and Deputy Mayor of Metropolitan Municipality Ozan Balci, the geothermal drilling works carried out for the discovery of geothermal water in the Cakirbey District of Ercis have yielded promising results.

While the work in the first well within the scope of the project is completed, the work in the second well continues. The Ven Metropolitan Municipality had published a video of the well discharging, which has been posted on the original JeotermalHaberler article.

With the geothermal resource confirmed, plans are underway to establish soilless agriculture and vegetable cultivation with an agriculture-based organized industrial greenhouse zone (TDIOSB) to be established in the district.

The discovery of geothermal resources in the Anatolia Region of Türkiye is an important breakthrough for geographical diversification. A recent article we published emphasized how almost all of the existing geothermal developments in Türkiye are in the Aegean region.
