Development of Dolphyn demonstrator project

Energy Disrupter

General – Wind Power and Green Hydrogen

Sustainability consultancy ERM are developing the Dolphyn Project, a pioneering 10MW commercial demonstrator project that aims to combine floating offshore wind power generation and green hydrogen production offshore.

It will be deployed at the existing Kincardine Floating Offshore Wind Farm, 15km off the coast of Aberdeen.

An Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub is being proposed as the landing point for Dolphyn’s green hydrogen.

The hub is to be developed as a venture between bp and Aberdeen City Council, and will be part of the wider Energy Transition Zone Ltd, rejuvenating the Altens area of the city. Phase one of the development includes a hydrogen production facility and vehicle re-fueling station at Hareness Road, together with a solar farm to be located on the adjacent former landfill site.

ERM aim to have a 2MW prototype operating in 2024, with the full scale 10MW facility online by 2026. The project, recently backed by the UK Government through the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio Low Carbon Hydrogen Competition, will initially create 400 jobs for the local economy and eventually many more if allowed to scale by the end of the decade.
