PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) – Energy bills in Illinois went up $50 a month in June and are set to continue to increase as the weather cools.

Spokesperson for the Citizens Utility Board Jim Chilsen said that natural gas prices are nearly triple what they were two years ago.

Chilsen and Ameren Illinois advise families to get their homes ready now so that they get ahead of potential price hikes.

“They need to make those energy efficiency improvements now. Energy efficiency can help soften the blow when prices are at a crisis level like they are now,” Chilsen said.

Chilsen said there are simple things you can do at home to save on energy cost, like setting your thermostat at 68 degrees when you’re home and lower when you’re not. You can also cover cracks in your windows and doors.
