It is due to supply Danish developer Eurowind Energy with eight of its SG 6.6-170 turbines with 135-metre towers.

Installation is planned for the second half of 2024.

Siemens Gamesa will also service the turbines for 20 years.

The order comes after what Siemens Gamesa described as “nearly ten years of standstill” for the Romanian wind power industry.

Most of Romania’s current 3GW installed capacity came online during a boom supported by generous incentives from 2010 to 2014. Since then very little capacity has been brought online amid regulatory uncertainty, according to Windpower Intelligence, the research and data division of Windpower Monthly.

However, developers have remained interested in the market, with investors gearing up for a second wave of project development on a subsidy-free basis.

Morten Gaarde, head of Engineering, procurement and construction at Eurowind, said: “We have a solid pipeline of coming projects under development in Romania, which we consider an attractive growth market in Europe.”

Clark MacFarlane, CEO of Siemens Gamesa’s operations in Northern Europe and the Middle East added that the manufacturer “foresee[s] further opportunities to develop what can be once more a burgeoning wind industry” in Romania.
