Biden administration hails ‘milestone’ announcement for Gulf of Maine

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said: “Today’s announcement for the Gulf of Maine represents one of the many milestones that this administration has achieved to advance offshore wind development, create good-paying jobs, and lower consumer energy costs, while collaborating with our government partners, tribes and key stakeholders.”

Maine has a goal of 80% of its electricity coming from renewables by 2030. The Biden administration is seeking 30GW of offshore wind online by 2030, up from just 42MW currently installed.

An auction for commercial wind leases off California, where the turbines would be floating, will be held later this year.
