The U.S. EPA released updated renewable identification number (RIN) data on Aug. 18, reporting that 1.7 billion RINs were generated under the Renewable Fuel Standard in July, down slightly from the same month of last year. Total RIN generation for the first seven months of 2022 is at nearly 12.5 billion, up from 11.8 billion generated during the same period of 2021.

More than 54.59 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in July, including 43.54 million generated for compressed renewable natural gas (RNG) by domestic producers, 7.93 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 2.86 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, 228,267 generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers, and 33,341 generated for liquefied RNG by importers.

Total D3 RIN generation or the first seven months of the year was at 310.56 million. That volume includes 248.99 million generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers, 43.16 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 16.81 million gallons generated for compressed RNG by importers, 795,145 generated for liquified RNG by importers, and 804,389 generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers.

More than 421.45 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in July, including 206.13 million generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 177.05 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 23.38 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 13.07 million generated for biodiesel by importers, and 1.82 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers.

Total D4 RIN generation for the first seven months of 2022 reached nearly 3.17 billion. That volume includes 1.35 billion generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 1.24 billion generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 390.49 generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 167.51 million generated for biodiesel by importers, 8.14 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers, 7.74 million generated for renewable jet fuel by foreign entities, and 37,939 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers.

More than 14.71 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in July, including 7.2 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 5.58 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 2.33 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 570,253 generated for LPG by domestic producers, and 51,845 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.

Total D5 RIN generation for the first seven months of the year reached 149.02 million. That volume includes 60.09 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 46.4 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 21.38 million generated for ethanol by importers, 17.21 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 2.51 million generated for LPG by domestic producers, 1.76 million generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, and 653,824 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.

Nearly 1.21 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in July, including 1.2 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 6.24 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 1.3 million generated for ethanol by importers.

Total D6 RIN generation for the first seven months of the year reached 8.42 billion. That volume includes 8.36 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 31.26 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 29.98 million generated for ethanol by importers.

No D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated in July. Total D7 RIN generation for the first seven months of the year was 160,995, all of which were generated for cellulosic heating oil by importers.
