Webinar: Geothermal well testing, design, and slimhole drilling – Registration open

Energy Disrupter

Webinar: Geothermal well testing, design, and slimhole drilling – Registration open Webinar speakers Assoc. Prof. Sadiq Zarrouk and Julius Dacanay, East Africa Geothermal Facility Online Webinar Series 2

As part of the East Africa Geothermal Webinar Series, two webinars will take place on geothermal well testing, well design, delivery process, and slimhole drilling. Registration is currently open.

Registration is now open for two webinars as part of the East Africa Geothermal Facility Webinar Series. This is a series of webinars organized by the New Zealand – Africa Geothermal Facility.

The webinars are generally 1.5 hours in length and include a pre-recorded video presentation, possibly with links to additional reading.  Participants’ questions will be addressed in a later live Zoom Q&A session. The course presenters are internationally recognized experts in their field from New Zealand and they will be available during the live Q&A sessions.

Depending on interest and expertise, participants can choose which sessions to attend or attend the whole series. The list of webinars included in this series can be viewed in a previous post.

Title: Geothermal Well Testing: An overview

Speaker: Associate Professor Sadiq Zarrouk

Q & A schedule: 17 May 2022, 10 AM East Africa Time

Registration link: Register here

Geothermal well test analysis is undertaken during drilling and/or after the completion of well drilling. These tests are designed to understand the well conditions after drilling, reservoir permeability, the down hole pressure and temperature distribution and the potential productivity and injectivity of the new well.

Geothermal well testing commonly utilizes techniques developed for the petroleum and groundwater industries. These techniques often do not provide accurate results when applied to geothermal data. Therefore geothermal well test analysis has been a combination of science and art when interpreting well test data. The webinar will give an overview of geothermal well test analysis and the advanced new numerical techniques that are widely adopted by the industry.

Title: Overview of geothermal slimhole drilling, well delivery process, and well design

Speaker: Julius Dacanay

Q & A schedule: 19 May 2022, 10 AM East Africa Time

Registration link: Register here

This webinar is a high-level discussion of geothermal slimhole drilling.

Julius will outline:

  • the objectives of geothermal slimhole exploration;
  • describe the characteristics of slimhole drilling and compare them with conventional rotary drilling,
  • explore the latest drilling exploration methods, and
  • underline the advantages of slimhole drilling.

The well delivery process for slimhole geothermal exploration and the various major activities that need to be undertaken from inception to completion of drilling, will be described. To finish, a short summary discussing slimhole well design will be presented.
