Vestas ‘signs MoU with Ulsan City’ to explore South Korea floating offshore wind plans

Energy Disrupter

Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Ulsan City, its port authority and Sejin Heavy Industries & Construction to cooperate on plans to develop a 9GW floating offshore wind complex by 2030, according to press reports.

Vestas was contacted for comment but had not responded when this article was published.

Under the terms of the MoU, it is understood that Vestas would work with the Ulsan authorities and Sejin to create the necessary infrastructure to develop the project, including establishing a base for the manufacturing and export of offshore wind equipment.

Vestas is also said to be in the process of establishing a partnership with South Korean manufacturer of wind turbine components CS Wind to investigate the possibility of producing blades and towers locally.

Last month, GE partnered with Hyundai Electric for a nacelle assembly plant in the country.

South Korea has a goal of installing 12GW of offshore wind by 2030. It currently has less than 100MW in operation.

Ulsan City already has several floating wind MoUs signed with leading developers including Equinor, Shell and Green Investment Group (GIG).
