Russian gas producer Novatek ‘plans 200MW wind farm to power Arctic Circle LNG plant’

Russian independent gas producer Novatek reportedly plans to build a wind farm to reduce the carbon footprint of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in the Arctic Circle.
It would use output from the 190-200MW project to directly power its Yamal LNG project, which is currently fed by a nearby thermal power station.
Novatek also plans to install an electrolyser at the wind farm to produce green hydrogen.
It plans to tender for a contractor to build the wind farm and supply turbines in late 2021 or early 2022, according to Russian business newspaper Kommersant.
The Yamal peninsula has wind speeds of 9m/s.
Vladimir Sklyar from financial analyst agency VTB Capital believes Novatek’s planned wind farm could cost RUB 12-14 billion ($162-189 million), according to Kommersant.
Novatek would not comment on the report.
