LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – Community Action Agencies across the Commonwealth are now accepting applications for the 2021 Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Summer Cooling Program. The program is meant to help offset the cost of higher electric bills because of rising temperatures using federal funding.

Applications will be accepted from July 12 through October 31, or until funds are depleted.

To help with electric cost, the LIHEAP Summer Cooling Program is made up of two components: Subsidy and Crisis. Qualifying households can apply for one or both components and eligibility will not be affected if a household has participated in prior LIHEAP programs. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements, with a household income at or under 150% of the state’s average income.

The Subsidy component gives households a one-time benefit going between $100 to $400 based on income levels and housing category. The Crisis component is present for households who demonstrate a home energy crisis situation. Benefits for that component will cover the minimum needed to help the crisis not to go over $600. Each time they experience a crisis situation, households can reapply until they reach their maximum benefit.
