CWP plans 30GW wind and solar power-to-x in Mauritania

Australian developer CWP Global has signed a pact with the Mauritanian government for a 30GW wind and solar power-to-x hub in the Sahara.

With the agreement, the north-west African country’s government has pledged to open the door to international investors and commit to accelerating progress on the project’s development and permitting approvals process.

The $40 million Aman project would be located in the north of the country on an approximately 8,500km² site in the Sahara, where there is a high-capacity factory profile for wind and solar, CWP explained.

It plans to use output from 30GW of wind and solar to produce green hydrogen and export this green hydrogen and its derivatives around the world.

Mark Crandall, chairman of CWP Global, said the project would create thousands of new jobs in construction, local manufacturing, operations and facilitating exports.

It is not yet clear how much of the project’s capacity will be wind and how much will be solar, when the project is due online, what turbines will be used, and who will be investing in it.

CWP is also in a consortium developing a similar 26GW green hydrogen and ammonia project in Western Australia.
