Keep your new home’s energy in check – The Daily Breeze
It’s a best practice to re-key when you move into a new home. Protects you from unwelcomed and unexpected guests who may try to use the key the former occupants gave to them – whether it is the neighbor who used to dog sit, the housekeepers, Uncle Monty or the handyman.
This is not meant to cast aspersions on anyone. You just want to know who has a key to your house, right?
Or rather, starting with a clean slate and a new key, you can then control who you give a copy to.
And since it is unlikely you will know much about the people who formerly occupied your new abode, you also may want to perform a cleansing. Of course, this includes the soap and water kind of cleansing, even if the former occupants left it fairly clean.
But what about cleansing the energy in your home?
Two prominent traditions include ritual cleansings: Feng Shui and “saging,” the Native American practice that includes wafting of smoke from burning sage leaves around your home.Stick with me – you may want to try this if you haven’t already.
The theory is that burning sage, or smudging, can clear out bad vibes, bad karma, bad energy and even ghosts. If you want to give all that bad mojo an incentive to move on, burning some sage is one method.
To find products for this ceremony, search for “California white sage,” “smudging kit,” “sage sticks for purity” and “sage smudge stick.” Order online or go to your local brick and mortar store if one happens to carry such products.
Your sage may come with directions, including words to say and a process to follow. Reading these will be helpful. Lighting your sage stick outside first, might also be helpful, as different sticks emit different volumes of smoke and can also smell differently. You want to gauge the amount of smoke outside first, lest you erroneously set off your inside smoke detectors, which you know work well due to your recent home inspection or landlord disclosure. And to see if you like the smell.
The smoke is a key factor in this process. Some kits come with beautiful feathers to spread the smoke around your home. You may have found a beautiful feather of your own that you want to use.
I’d say spread a little smoke all over – you never know where the bad vibes may be hiding. Just be prepared with a fireproof vessel to extinguish the sage stick when you are through – lest it burns down to the nub and scorches your fingers.
