Co-financing from the national fund has been secured for a proposed exploration drilling program for geothermal resources in the Brzesko commune in Poland.

An agreement has been signed for the co-financing of the drilling of an exploratory borehole for geothermal resources in the in the vicinity of Pomianowski Stok in the commune of Brzesko in Poland. With this agreement, a majority of the cost of the project will be subsidized by a grant by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.

The Brzesko commune was announced as one of the recipients for funding for geothermal projects under the “Provision of thermal waters in Poland” back in November 2023. The allocation for Brzesko is over PLN 13.7 million (approx. USD 3.5 million). The Brzesko commune will then allocate a total of around PLN 3 million (approx. USD 77ok) from the 2025 and 2026 budget to complete the investment needed for the project.

Drilling works are expected to be completed by 30 June 2026.

Research and exploration work for geothermal resources in Brzesko started back in 2020. Scientists from the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow and experts from a specialist company were invited to determine the best location for exploration drilling. By July 2021, the location for the exploration and reconnaissance drilling was finalized. The commune then submitted an application for funding by April 2022.

Experts from the National Environmental Protection Fund and the Chief Geologist of the Country have chosen two places in Ma?opolska that have the greatest potential for geothermal energy production. One of them is located in Kraków and the second – the most important for Brzesko – is on Pomianowski Stok.
