Eavor and NDEWG have come together for an innovative geothermal solution in Hanover, Germany that combines open and closed-loop geothermal systems.

Norddeutsche Erdwärme Gewinnungsgesellschaft GmbH (NDEWG) and Eavor GmbH have signed an agreement for a novel geothermal concept that will be implemented in Altwarmbüchener Moor permit area in Hanover, Germany. The agreement is for a “multi-storey” geothermal solution, with a hydrothermal system in the upper levels, and an Eavor-Loop solution at the lower levels.

“This partnership shows how innovative cooperation can drive the energy transition. We are showing how different technologies at different depths can be used together to efficiently use a permit area,” said Daniel Mölk, Managing Director of Eavor GmbH.

As part of the agreement, Eavor will receive approval from the permit holder NDEWG to create Eavor loops in the lower levels of the Altwarmbüchener Moor permit area. The goal would for this to run in parallel with a hydrothermal geothermal solution in the upper levels that will be developed by NDEWG.

When deployed, this will be the first time that both open and closed-loop geothermal solutions will be used in a single permit area as part of a geological layered solution. The Hanover region is expected to benefit from this diverse and innovative approach, securing a sustainable heat supply and contributing towards energy transition goals.

“Our cooperation shows that geothermal energy, regardless of the technology, is an indispensable part of the energy transition and that new, future-oriented paths can be taken through collaborative solutions,” explains Albrecht Möhring, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of NDEWG GmbH.

Eavor is currently developing the first commercial-scale deployment of their Eavor-Loop technology in Geretsried, Germany.
