SLB and Ormat have announced a partnership that combines their expertise to reduce geothermal development risk through a comprehensive suite of solutions.

Global energy service and technology company SLB has announced a strategic partnership with renewable energy developer and operator Ormat Technologies Inc. to develop and deliver integrated geothermal projects. The partnership aims to combine the two companies’ core strengths to reduce the risk of geothermal projects while improving their overall economics and ensuring long-term performance and reliability.

SLB will be working with Ormat to provide operators with both traditional and next-generation geothermal solutions like enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) and advanced geothermal solutions (AGS), with SLB obtaining a license of Ormat’s EGS patent. The integrated offering will provide developers with a comprehensive suite of solutions, from exploration and resource assessment to power plant commissioning and operation.

SLB has been working in the subsurface for more than 100 years and have been involved in 80% of the world’s geothermal power projects. On the other hand, Ormat is the largest manufacturer of geothermal binary equipment and the second-largest global owner and operator of geothermal fields and power plants under management.

The collaboration combines Ormat’s expertise in geothermal fields and project development, power plant design, manufacturing, operations, and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) capabilities with SLB’s expertise in reservoir characterization, well construction, completions, and production technologies.

The partners aim to provide a full spectrum of solutions to deliver increased project efficiencies and economics through their combined strengths and expertise.

“Geothermal energy represents a significant opportunity for the energy transition, providing clean, baseload renewable power,” said Irlan Amir, Vice President of Renewables and Energy Efficiency, SLB. “By combining our expertise with Ormat’s, we can help customers unlock the full potential of geothermal resources and accelerate the deployment of this sustainable energy source.”

“Ormat’s world class geothermal development and technology expertise perfectly complements SLB’s significant reservoir knowledge and well construction technologies and expertise,” said Paul Thomsen, Vice President of Business Development, Ormat. “Together, we can deliver more projects, offering exceptional value to our developers and contributing to a cleaner energy future.”
