Order for first hybrid unmanned surface vessel at Astilleros Gondán
Wind Energy – Hybrid USV
USV AS, a consortium of leading Norwegian vessel owners and survey specialists has contracted Astilleros Gondán to build its first uncrewed surface vessel (USV).
The USV, which is expected to enter service in 2025, will be capable of inspection, maintenance and repair work at offshore wind farms.
USV AS is a joint venture company established by DeepOcean, Solstad Offshore and Østensjø whose main purpose is to invest and own USVs. The companies estimate that using a USV rather than a conventional, manned offshore vessel will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 90%.
The JV concept development for the USV began in 2018.
The uncrewed vessel will have a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system, with a battery package from Seam. This will enable it to operate offshore for up to 30 days without charging or refuelling. It will be equipped with a work-class remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that is capable of operating in a water depth of 1,500 m.
The USV will be remotely controlled from shore but will have many autonomous features to ensure safety and integrity of the survey spread on board. It will be equipped with a work-class remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that is capable of operating in a water depth of 1,500 m.
