Green hydrogen from wind power ‘could enable sustainable aviation’
The agreement foresees the production and long-term offtake of sustainable fuels from green hydrogen and captured CO2, in particular targeting synthetic aviation fuel (eSAF).
Nordic Electrofuel plans to produce carbon-neutral eFuel to be sent to refining partners to make end products such as aviation fuel and heavy-duty road transport fuel (eDiesel).
Nordic Electrofuel said it could make synthetic crude in Norway and deliver it to P2X-Europe to be converted to other synthetic products.
Initial production of 8,000 tonnes per annum will be at Porsgrunn, 150 kilometres southwest of Oslo. Nordic Electrofuel has a portfolio of subsequent plants with a roadmap to reach a capacity of 800,000 tonnes within a decade.
According to Nordic Electrofuel, the legal framework for decarbonisation “is a clear call for action”. Under the European Commission’s draft ‘ReFuelEU’ aviation regulation, an initial blending quota of renewable fuels is required as of 2025 and a specific quota for eSAF from 2030.
