China dominates 2022’s record wind turbine order intake – Wood Mackenzie

Energy Disrupter

Chinese OEMs Envision, Mingyang, and Goldwind led the rankings for order intakes in 2022, with each manufacturer securing more than 17GW in firm orders last year.

Windey, Vestas, GE, Sany, CRRC, Siemens Gamesa and Shanghai Electric completed the top ten, as Wood Mackenzie tracked a total of 134.6GW of firm wind turbine orders in 2022.

This total marked a 30% increase on 2021 levels and was a record-high.

China dominated activity, accounting for 70% of 2022’s intake, as developers looked to help fulfil decarbonisation targets set out in the country’s 14th five-year plan, Wood Mackenzie explained. By contrast, order intake outside of China fell 15% to 41GW.

Wood Mackenzie also tracked a record 19GW of offshore wind orders in 2022, with China – which accounted for 80% of this total – again dominating.

“We’ve seen incredible activity in China, but its soaring numbers have somewhat masked a slowdown from western OEMs, which have been impacted by supply chain challenges and cost increases,” said Luke Lewandowski, Wood Mackenzie research director

“This has negatively impacted both new order intake and installation activity outside of China.”

While wind turbine orders fell outside of China, there were positive signs in the US following passage of the climate-boosting Inflation Reduction Act in August 2022.

Order intake in North America was up 7%, with orders in the second half of the year up 224% on the first half.
