Sea Installer underwent eye-catching metamorphosis

DEME is upgrading its fleet to keep pace with the times, as new wind turbines become heavier and larger.

DP2 jack-up installation vessel Sea Installer is the first vessel to be made ready to handle these next generation turbines.

To carry out all the conversion work, including the removal of the crane, an agreement was signed with the Gemak Shipyard in Turkey.

Within an ambitious timeframe, the Sea Installer had to undergo an eye-catching metamorphosis. The most notable activity is the replacement of the existing 900 t crane with an imposing 1,600 t crane.

The new, so-called Leg Encircling Crane (LEC), with a load capacity of 1,600 tonnes, was recently delivered by Huisman in Schiedam, the Netherlands.

The installation of the crane means that the Sea Installer is now ready to start works on the Vineyard project in the US. DEME will be shuttling GE wind turbines on US barges outfitted with motion compensated tables enabling DEME to execute vessel-to-vessel transfers of the WTG components.
