What Can (And Can’t) Go In Your General Waste Bin? 🗑️
What Can Go In Your General Waste Bin? 🗑️: Whether you are a new business or not, it is always good to keep in and refresh your mind and learn what you can (and can’t) put in your general waste bin. Learning what waste goes in and not can help you save the environment and save you some money at the same time.
We’ve heard about your business, and we couldn’t be more supportive of it! Whether new or not, you are probably thinking of ways to improve it. Keep in mind that both waste management and recycling are just as important as other aspects of your business operations.
With so many items being invented and produced regularly, it is becoming more challenging to keep track of what to put in your bin. Businesses, in particular, and no matter what industry they are, regularly generate significant amounts of materials and waste.
In general, businesses should encourage the idea of reuse, recycling and resource recovery before anything else to reduce the amount of waste going to and ending up in landfill. But along with those, they also need to keep in mind that they should dispose of waste correctly. By disposing of waste correctly, we mean that they should place them in the correct bin.
In this information-filled blog, we cover what you typically can and can’t put in your general waste bin. Contrary to popular belief, one can’t just throw whatever waste they have in hand in the general waste bin. Both your council and your waste and recycling provider (Waster, for example) will give you guidelines on what you can or can’t throw. We here at Waste suggest that you continue reading to learn more.

Waster: here’s what you can and can’t put in your general waste bin
What is general waste, first and foremost?
Basically, general waste is any waste that is produced from both businesses and households that can’t be recycled. We can also refer to it as ‘residual waste’, but we mostly call it general waste.
For a long period of time, we’ve always disposed of general waste in their designated bin, proceed to have them taken away by a rubbish truck and store them in landfill invariably. However, technology has evolved further and found ways to deal with the growing amount of waste in landfill. For example, we now have incineration, a process that involves burning waste and turning it into energy. Sweden, in particular, powers houses, vehicles and more using energy from incineration.
Wherever your waste goes, you have to make sure to dispose of them correctly, which you can first do by putting them in the proper bin. Generally, you can put almost any type of waste in the general waste bin, hence having ‘general’ in its name. But we do have a few exceptions.
Below, here are examples of what you can put in your general waste bin.
Here are examples of what to put
You can also put other items such as food waste, soiled nappies and sanitary pads. However, there are dedicated bins for those that will help save you more money. Waster, for example, offers organic and sanitary waste bins for those types of waste.
Now, we proceed to what you can’t put in your general waste bin.
Here’s what you can’t put in your general waste bin
As for what you can’t put in your general bin if you avail of Waster’s services, they are construction waste such as building materials, bricks, steel, wood etc. and chemicals or hazardous waste such as rat poison, asbestos etc. We give you further examples below as to what you cannot put in your general waste bin.
- garden waste (we have organic waste bins for that)
- recyclables, paper or cardboard
- syringes or medical waste (we have medical waste for that)
- motor oil, fluids, paints or solvents
