Home energy management pilot launches in Milan – Smart Energy

The project is focused on demonstrating the potential for connected home appliances to provide flexibility to the grid.

The initiative, one of seven national demonstrators in the Horizon 2020 supported InterConnect project, is recruiting up to 130 participants, who in the first phase will be supplied with state-of-the-art washing machines from Whirlpool.

Using an app they will set their chosen washing programme and preferred running times a day ahead. Smart solution provider Planet Idea, the project leader, will then monitor and reprogramme the washing cycles to redistribute the load to better meet the needs of the grid.

The other key participant in the demonstration is the Italian energy systems research institute RSE.

Overall the pilot aims to demonstrate a home energy management system for residential apartments that is interoperable with different home appliance manufacturers and to demonstrate data exchange between systems and devices through the Planet project app.

A range of different grid flexibility and digital services are planned with participation expected to scale up to include over 200 apartments before the project’s end in September 2023.

With the Planet app users will be able to access the smart solutions available in the building and it will connect them with various service providers as well as facilitate connection and collaboration with other users.

InterConnect

InterConnect is a four-year large scale initiative involving 50 organisations from 11 countries in developing and demonstrating advanced digital solutions for interconnecting homes and other buildings to the electricity network based on an Internet of Things architecture.

Other pilots are taking place in Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Netherlands and Portugal to test a range of smart home technologies in different residential and non-residential settings.

The project leader is the Portuguese research institute INESC TEC with the Dutch TNO as the technical coordinator. Other participants include distribution system operators (DSOs) and IoT/IT providers, in addition to the research organisations, vendors and end users.
