Samsung unveils new ECO-WTIV design
South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has unveiled its first proprietary Wind Turbine Installation Vessel (WTIV) design.
It breaks new ground by using a combination of advanced green technologies to slash CO2 emissions and reduce operating costs.
Although SHI was the first South Korean shipbuilder to book a WTIV order, and has delivered a total of three, this new ECO-WTIV is the first of its own design.
The design has already received approval in principle (AiP) from three classification societies: ABS, DNV and Lloyd’s Register.
It uses eco-friendly technologies that include LNG-fueled engines, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and Energy Storage Solution (ESS) to achieve a claimed 50% reduction in CO2 emissions compared with a diesel powered ship and according to SHI it will save operating costs significantly with high power efficiency.”
SHI has partnered with Hyosung Heavy Industries, to deliver the vessel’s jacking system.
