BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — The Broome County Department of Social Services says not much is changing with the program this year.

Home Energy Assistance Programs (HEAP) provides energy assistance to low income households through payments to those households’ utility suppliers.

Also provides emergency assistance for any repairs or replacements needed to a households essential heating equipment.

Eligibility is based on income, household size and the type of primary energy source in the household.

Deputy Commissioner of Assistance Programs Jessie Sullivan says right now Broome County has about 22,000 households eligible for HEAP.

“Currently, if you’re on SNAP or temporary assistance you’re automatically eligible for the benefit and you don’t have to separately apply for it,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan also mentioned the department expects the number of applications to increase this year due to the pandemic.
