First turbines in US federal waters online

The utility-owned project consists of two of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy’s SWT-6.0-154 turbines.

Located 43km off the coast of Virginia Beach in the Mid-Atlantic region, they are the first wind turbines in federal waters in the US.

Previously, only the 30MW Block Island has been installed offshore in America, in state waters off New England in the north-eastern US. 

CVOW’s monopile foundations were installed in May 2020. 

The turbines were installed in June by Jan De Nul’s jackup vessel Vole au Vent.

Both turbines are online and electrical and reliability tests are being carried out, Dominion stated.

The last of the project’s three 880MW phases is expected to be completed in 2026.
