Market consultation for partners for geothermal heating project in Amsterdam, NL
The Municipality of Amsterdam, Netherlands, with partners EBN and Vattenfall, are looking for an additional partner for a geothermal heating project.
The Municipality of Amsterdam, Vattenfall, and Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN) have launched a Market Consultation to gauge interest from potential partners for a geothermal heating project in Amsterdam, Netherlands. More specifically, the parties would like to expand the collaboration with an operator.
The Market Consultation is an initial step for an official tender planned for 2025. The Market Consultation documents have been posted on the Mercell platform, through which interested parties may also participate. The call ends on 1 December 2024.
This Market Consultation has several objectives:
- To inform the market of the intended tender for the expansion of the cooperation;
- To gauge interest in this collaboration;
- To gain insight into the possibilities and ambitions of market parties with regard to the specific requirements and objectives applicable to the tender.
The information obtained from this phase will be used to prepare the tender documents. The Market Consultation is without obligation for all the parties involved, and participation does not put market parties in a favoured or disfavored position when tendering.
Details of the project
The project concerns the Mining Permit Geothermal Search Area Amsterdam-Amstelveen 1 that was assigned to the partners effective January 2023 and has a term of 4(+1) years. The aim of the partners is to develop geothermal sources for the further sustainability of the heating networks in the Amsterdam region.
Based on the available subsurface data (seismic and well data) in combination with the heat demand, the initial focus of the feasibility study for this lies in the southeastern part of the permit area; the sub-area “Amstelland”. An initial rough plan has been drawn up for the “Amstelland” project with the objective of having the first geothermal source operational in 2030.
The cooperation between the municipality of Amsterdam, Vattenfall and EBN initially concerns the feasibility phase. This phase is expected to last until mid-2026. The next step for this phase of the project is the acquisition of seismic data in Amstelland, which is already in the planning phase and is expected to commence in the spring of 2025.
