TenneT has developed a new 2GW (Gigawatt) standard to accelerate offshore wind deployment. The new standard aims to further reduce the cost of offshore wind and to minimize the spatial and environmental impact.

The IJmuiden Ver Alpha project is the first 2GW offshore grid connection to be realized. This connection will deliver electricity equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 2 million households in the Netherlands. More importantly, offshore wind farms will be a key enabler for the industry’s transition to sustainable energy sources.

Collaboration is key in this project. According to Kruithof it is impossible to realize a project like IJmuiden Ver Alpha without partners, the municipalities, the government, and other stakeholders.

Construction partners are DEME Offshore, Dura Vermeer, PMP, Prysmian, Petrofac/Hitachi, and Taihan Electric Wire.
