Indonesia and Iceland have signed an agreement to cooperate in the field of renewable energy, with an emphasis on geothermal, at the recent IIGCE in Jakarta.

A declaration of intent on cooperation between Iceland and Indonesia in geothermal matters was signed yesterday at the annual Indonesia International Geothermal Convention & Exhibition (IIGCE) which took place in Jakarta. The cooperation concerns renewable energy, with an emphasis on the development of geothermal energy.

The declaration is intended, among other things, to support Icelandic geothermal companies in their continued market penetration in Indonesia and to strengthen scientific cooperation between the countries. Possible cooperation opportunities on carbon disposal and storage will also be explored.

The Indonesian event was attended by representatives of eight Icelandic companies, whose participation was organized in collaboration with the Iceland Office and the Embassy of Iceland in Tokyo. Stefán Haukur Jóhannesson, Iceland’s ambassador to Indonesia, signed the declaration  on behalf of Iceland, while the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate is responsible for implementing the cooperation on behalf of Iceland.

The cooperation between the countries will continue in terms of knowledge building, but since 1982, Geothermal School GRÓ has received 50 students from Indonesia, many of whom work for the country’s largest energy companies.Iceland’s ambassador also met with Bahlil Lahadalia, Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, and Pahala Mansyurc, Indonesia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, in connection with Iceland’s participation in the Geothermal Forum.
