Large offshore wind turbine deal and North American success boost Vestas in July

Energy Disrupter

An offshore deal accounted for more than half of the total, with Vestas securing an order to supply the 795MW OranjeWind (Hollandse Kust West VII) project in the Dutch North Sea.

The Danish firm is due to supply 53 of its V236-15.0MW turbines for RWE and TotalEnergies’ project – formerly known as Hollandse Kust West VII – with installation due to start in 2027.

Onshore, the North American market proved fruitful for Vestas in July. It received a 347MW order in Canada – replacing Siemens Gamesa as supplier of a large project in Quebec – as well as 253MW of supply deals in the US.

It agreed to supply 56 of its V162-6.2 MW turbines from its EnVentus platform to Invenergy, for the 347MW PohĂ©nĂ©gamook-Picard-Saint-Antonin-Wolastokuk (PPAW) project in Quebec, with delivery and commissioning expected in 2025. Laura Beane, president of Vestas North America, described it as “a significant deal for Canada”.

In the US, Vestas received an order for 62 of its V120-2.2 MW turbines to repower an undisclosed wind farm, alongside one for 26 of its V150-4.5 MW turbines for another undisclosed project.

Delivery and commissioning in both cases is scheduled for 2025.

Elsewhere, Vestas received an order from WindBauer, for the 49MW Bartow Pfalz project in Germany. It will comprise six of Vestas’ V162-7.2 MW turbines and one V150-6.0 MW turbine.

Meanwhile, SSE announced Vestas as the turbine supplier for its 50MW Aberarder project in the Scottish Highlands, where it will install 12 of its V117-4.2 MW turbines in 4.3MW mode.

SSE and Vestas are also partnering on the 103-turbine 443MW Viking (SSE)   wind farm in Shetland, where first power was generated earlier this summer.

The July order haul follows Vestas announcing nearly 3GW of turbine deals in the second quarter of 2024.
