Second Chinese OEM installs massive 18MW wind turbine

Energy Disrupter

According to the story CCTV+ published on 30 June, an 18MW wind turbine has been installed in Yingkou City, Liaoning province, in the north-east of China.

An accompanying video showed the turbine featuring the logo of Chinese wind turbine manufacturer CSSC Haizhuang on the side of the turbine nacelle visible in the footage.

“After the testing and adjusting phase, the offshore wind turbines set will be connected to the power grid in Yingkou City of Liaoning Province,” CCTV stated.

The installation follows Chinese OEM Dongfang claiming a world first by installing its own 18MW wind turbine in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong earlier this month.

Fellow Chinese OEM Mingyang Smart Energy is also developing an 18MW turbine, and has plans for a 22MW model.

CSSC first announced details of its 18MW turbine model — the H260-18MW featuring a 260-metre rotor — in November 2022, with the unit’s first nacelle produced in January last year.

The H260-18MW is designed for offshore wind projects and its blades, gearboxes and generators are provided by other companies owned by the government-owned China State Shipbuilding Corporation – the parent company of CSSC Haizhuang.

Other components – such as bearings, sensors, oil pumps – are imported, CSSC Haizhuang previously told Windpower Monthly.
