Suzlon’s vice chair appointed as new head of GWEC India
The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC)’s India division has appointed Girish Tanti has its new chair.
Tanti is currently serving as the vice chair of Indian wind turbine manufacturing major Suzlon.
He was appointed as GWEC’s vice chair in April this year.
“Ranked fourth in the world, India is one of the most crucial countries for wind energy, today. There is unanimous global consensus that India will play an instrumental role in accelerating the tripling of renewables and helping achieve global renewables and energy transition targets, not just in installations but also as a key player in the global supply chain,” Tanti said on accepting the role as GWEC India chair.
His comments referred to India’s current online wind energy capacity, which at more than 45GW is the fourth largest wind fleet in the world.
India’s wind fleet is currently all onshore and the country is looking to kickstart its offshore wind sector.
The country’s cabinet recently awarded around $890 million for the development of 1GW of offshore wind off the coasts of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu amid a national plan to award leases for 37GW of offshore wind capacity by the end of the decade.
Suzlon has over 19GW of installed wind capacity, most of which is in India, according to Windpower Intelligence.
