MAN to partner with Karlsfeld, Germany for geothermal heating project
The municipality of Karlsfeld, Germany is in talks for a joint geothermal development with truck and bus manufacturer MAN for district heating.
The municipality of Karlsfeld in Bavaria, Germany is strongly considering the implementation of a joint geothermal heating project with bus and truck manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus SE (MAN). If plans proceed, drilling for the project can begin by 2025.
The unprecedented partnership will take advantage of the plans of MAN to convert its gas-fired heating system that currently supplies its factories and offices to sustainable geothermal energy. This can then be connected to an existing 15-kilometer district heating network that currently serves 30% of Karlsfeld, including all large public buildings and schools.
Karlsfeld had already considered drilling for geothermal heating 20 years ago. This did not push through because of high financial risk, opting instead for a wood-fired combined heat and power plant.
With drilling planned by 2025, the Karlsfeld heating network can be connected to a geothermal energy source by summer 2026. However, head of municipal utilities Martin Eberle stated that matters such as the technology to be used and the operator model are yet to be discussed.
