The top 1 country that produces the most waste

Many countries nowadays have fully recognised the importance of managing waste. Laws have been passed that regulate how towns, cities, and businesses handle their generated waste. However, significant amounts of waste are still generated. Developed and developing countries all play a role in that.

Now, which country do you think produces the most waste? Of course, many will think of a developed country as opposed to a developing country as the number one. And, all of those who think that is correct.

Canada is number 1

At the top, Canada is the top 1 country that produces the most waste. The country has the largest estimated total waste generation in the entire world. To put it into perspective, Canada’s estimated annual waste per capita is 36.1 metric tonnes. Additionally, Canada has an estimated annual waste total of 1,325,480,289 metric tonnes. In other words, Canada produced 1.33 billion metric tonnes of waste of which one person equates to 36.1 metric tonnes annually. Canada’s population at the time of this statistic’s conception is 36,708, 083.

Tops 2-5 countries that produced the most waste

Now, who is the second country that produces the most waste in the top 5 list? How about the third? Fourth? And, finally, the fifth?

We continue on with the top 5:

2. Bulgaria

Continuing with our list, Bulgaria is a country that produces the second-most waste in the whole world. At the time of this list (2018), Bulgaria had a population of 7 million – or, precisely 7, 075, 947. The country’s estimated waste per capita is 26.7 metric tonnes, meaning one person, on average, produces this number.

On the other hand, Bulgaria has an estimated annual waste total of 189, 141, 945 metric tonnes. In other words, the country as a whole produced more than 189 million metric tonnes of waste. The majority of the waste comes from the construction industry, which picked up the pace after the global recession.

3. United States of America

The United States produces the third-most amount of waste globally. Moreover, it produces the most municipal solid waste in the whole world. This country generated 8,425,840,000 metric tonnes of waste – 25.9 metric tonnes per person. This is already a given due to the fact that the United States houses 325,147,121 last 2018, which has already increased by this time.

4. Estonia

Now, we go to the fourth country on the list: Estonia. Estonia is the country that produces the fourth-most amount of waste. It has an estimated annual waste per capita of 23.5 metric tonnes. Correspondingly, it has an estimated annual waste total of 30,912,409 tonnes. It is quite surprising, due to the fact that only 1,317,384 lived there in 2018.

Moreover, a third of the waste is classified as hazardous. As a result, regulations have been passed in regard to discharging hazardous waste.

5. Finland

Finally, we have reached the last on our list: Finland. It is the top 5 country in terms of most waste produced. It has an estimated annual waste total of 91,698,449 metric tonnes. Additionally, Finland has an estimated annual waste per capita of 16.6 metric tonnes.

Only 3 per cent of the country’s total waste produced is considered municipal waste. Adding to that, the majority of the waste goes through incineration. This is largely part of the improvement of technology to handle their generated waste. The other 97 per cent comes from mostly the construction industry.

Bonus info: the country that produces the most plastic waste

Now, some have already asked this: which country produces the most plastic waste? We also present this to you to know which country has the most plastic waste generation:

  1. China – 59.8 million tonnes
  2. The United States – 37.83 million tonnes
  3. Germany – 14.48 million tonnes
  4. Brazil – 11.85 million tonnes
  5. Japan – 7.99 million tonnes

Conclusion on which country produces the most waste
