Siemens Gamesa signs wind turbine deal to power Indian steel giant

AM Green Energy – a subsidiary of Indian steel producing major ArcelorMittal – plans to use the Kurnool wind farm to power its steel manufacturing operations in Hazira, Gujarat state, on India’s west coast. 

Siemens Gamesa plans to produce the turbines at its manufacturing plants in India. The company currently has a blade factory in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, plus a nacelle factory and operations-maintenance centre in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. 

Turbine supply for the Karnool project is expected in the second quarter of this year, the company stated.

ArcelorMittal is the world’s second-largest steel-producing company, trailing China Baowu Group, according to the World Steel Association. 

India itself is the world’s second-largest steel producing country, after China. India produced around 118 megatonnes of crude steel in 2021, according to the World Steel Association, amounting to around 6% of the global total. China by contrast produced 1,032 megatonnes, equivalent to around 54% of the global total that year. 

Siemens Gamesa claims to be the market leader for wind energy in India with over 8GW of installed wind capacity in the country. 

India recently upped its plans to roll out additional wind power in line with climate goals. 

The Indian government now plans to tender 10GW of new wind energy projects every year up to 2028 in an effort to reach 50% of cumulative installed electricity generation capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by the end of the decade. 

India currently has an installed wind capacity of 40.4GW, according to Windpower Intelligence, the research and data division of Windpower Monthly.
