Ørsted signs off on 920MW offshore wind projects in Taiwan Strait

Ørsted won rights to develop the 337MW Greater Changhua 2b Greater Changhua 2b (337MW) Offshoreoff Changhua, Taiwan, Asia-Pacific Click to see full details and 583MW Greater Changhua 4 Greater Changhua 4 (583MW) Offshoreoff Changhua County, Taiwan, Asia-Pacific Click to see full details wind farms off the coast of Taiwan in 2018, and said final investment for both projects was now confirmed. 

Ørsted Group will finance the projects with its own capital alongside debt provided by Taiwanese market, the Danish utility said in a statement. 

The sites are located 35-60km off the coast of Changhua in the Taiwan Strait between the island and mainland China. Together, the projects have a combined capacity of 920MW. 

They will cover a 185km2 stretch of the Taiwan Strait and reach depths of  23.8-44.1 metres. 

Ørsted said onshore construction for the Greater Changhua 2b and 4 wind farms is expected to begin this year, with completion for both planned by the end of 2025. 

The Danish energy giant signed a power purchase agreement with the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for the projects in 2020, claiming this was the largest contract ever signed of its kind in renewable energy. 

Ørsted is currently developing a number of other offshore wind power projects in Taiwan, including two further phases of the Greater Changhua offshore wind hub.
